A simple tablecloth that functions as an a bib for diners to enjoy eating together.

Ideation

It was very difficult ideating for this project. We went over a bunch of different ideas going from the bedding experience to the bathroom, to the lobby to the restaurant. We learned that it’s very difficult to come up with items for this specific prompt. But I think that’s what makes this problem so interesting.

We decided on a dining experience that decided to solve a very simple problem. Spillage during dining.

Our final Idea for the project came about while thinking about the dining experience. Our problem statement being how annoying using a napkin is. Between the napkin falling down and dropping on oneself, we thought could it be interesting to change the form of the tablecloth to something a little more absurd.

The Concept

A big part of the project was trying to understand what we could make that was absurd in one of the specific scopes. For our absurd tablecloth we felt that it would be more absurd on the function vs anything else.

Above are our 2 proposals for how we could connect the individual aprons together. Each had their pros and cons. The left one was problematic because it wouldn’t allow for a dip in the apron which we needed so you weren’t so tied to the table. The right was a little more free flowing but may not have looked as good

Initial Paper Apron Prototype

We began with the design of a simple apron, focusing on dimensions and the fit. Trying to understand what the ideal dimensions would be when all the 4 aprons were connected and seated together.

Time to get our hands dirty and start sewing.

Fabric prototype

We bought some fabric that we could try and test out the pattern and play with some of the designs we had but with a material that would be closer to the final product vs paper which was a little stiffer.
