For my final assignment, I wanted to create a box that played around with the idea of time. The idea of time passing by and moving between different state was a very interesting concept to me. I wanted to try and illustrate that in my Cornell Box.

There were a few distinct elements that I wanted to have animate.

  1. The Sun and Moon shifting between day and night
  2. Multiple clocks running faster than realtime all showing different times.
  3. The cut out on the track moving back and forth

Figure 1: A early prototype of my Cornell Box that had the 3 core elements I wanted to have.

I felt like I was missing a central element to draw the eye to something, and that combined with how personal my box was to me I asked a friend (Kevin Lee) to draw up a quick sketch of my face.

I felt this was a great representation of me and really helped contrast against the very 3D background. Having my face as the central focal point that slowly hovered up and down provided some minimal movement that let the background in the back come together.

My V2 Cornell Box is below. I had my face centered in the middle of the box and had the same distinct elements present. The clocks on both sides felt very large and present which really gave it that feel of time passing by vs the older configuration of 6 clocks per side.

Another element here that made the box feel more personal was the train car on the bottom navigating through different elements of my life.

Going from left to right, the train made “stops” at the following locations

Overall I learned a lot from this project in terms of creating textures, modifying elements and scripts and using assets found online.

As part of the project I had to animate individual elements and so here I managed to animate the laptops opening and closing, the record player needle and the planets spinning around a central point.
