Our original idea was to create a brief sound walk of getting home, starting when you arrive at your door.
For our object idea I decided to go with Keys 🔑
Keys have a very interesting journey. Each one has their own story to tell, for most of us we have multiple keys that can get us entry into many places. They are placed not only in pockets and purses but also on a multitude of surfaces. For our story, we wanted to take a journey back home.
I start my journey entering my apartment building, I enter the code to the building and i hear the positive beep. I head into my apartment building. I press the elevator button and you hear the ding. The elevator mechanism starts to work and we hear the pulleys start to engage. All the while I'm reaching for my keys. The elevator gets to the ground floor, and I step in. While this is happening I find the key to my apartment. The heavy steps I take towards my apartment door, after the weight of the day. All I want to do is rest. The keys have been through this rigamarole multiple times. They know the feeling of a late night or a long work day. Finally I reach my apartment and I put the key into the lock. The clicks are satisfying every time. It's the perfect match. The slow unlock that gives me refuge into my home is what the keys do every day.
Sounds created by my actions include footsteps, inserting a key into the door, turning the key, removing the key, opening and closing the door, and turning the deadbolt to lock the door, getting into an elevator and hearing the dings and beeps of the system.
Our final soundscape features a walk back home - the sounds of trains and cars passing by. Adding to the stress and tension of the outside world. The journey inside and the elevator starts the journey of serenity. Knowing that comfort will come soon. The heavy steps inside to the final door with the key unlocking takes us to a place of comfort.
